Dental technology has evolved so much during recent years that conventional dental procedures may seem like such a hassle. The ease and convenience that it has brought to the table have made it quite easy for both patients and dentists. In fact, patients' chair time has been reduced significantly, so much so that some of the most complicated procedures can now be completed in a single visit to the dentist's practice.
Conventional dental restorations, such as crowns, bridges, and veneers, are prepared at a dental laboratory using digital scans and impressions as a reference. This would usually take between a few days to a couple of weeks to be completed. In the meantime, the dentist may place a temporary restoration in your mouth, or in the worst-case scenario, leave it as is. Many patients would not be happy with this method, mostly due to the long waiting time and fearing the embarrassment when someone notices the temporary restoration.
In order to avoid these hassles, dental practices have started to adopt same-day dentistry, which includes in-house restorations and placement. The dentist will thoroughly diagnose the oral cavity and determine the best means to treat it. With the help of a hand-held scanning tool, the teeth will be scanned, and the data will be input to a chairside CAD/CAM machine. In just a few minutes, the computerized milling machine mills out the restoration from a small block of dental-grade ceramic. The dentist will make minor changes to the restorations and bond them to the teeth using dental adhesives. You can walk into our dental practice in the morning, get your teeth scanned and the dental restoration prepared by afternoon, and walk out with a happy, transformed smile by an evening just in time for dinner.
